| February 15, 2010 -- Eastern Engineered Wood Products Certified for Chain of Custody for Both Major Forestry Certification Programs |
| Eastern Engineered Wood Products (Eastern), a wholesale distributor of structural building products servicing the northeastern U.S., recently achieved Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC – The mark of responsible forestry, SGSNA-COC-000001, © 1996 Forest Stewardship Council A.C.) Chain of Custody Certification and Chain of Custody Certification for The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) programs. These certifications ensure that Eastern’s customers have a verifiable connection between their companies and certified manufacturers who adhere to the requirements of the FSC and SFI forestry certification programs.
Builders who utilize products manufactured from forests certified by FSC, with an intact chain of custody, can qualify for points in the US Green Building Council’s LEED system, which is a third-party certification program and benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings.
Other competing green building systems, including the National Association of Homebuilders’ (NAHB) Green Building Standard, also recognize SFI certified forests in addition to FSC certified forests. “Achieving both certifications provides the opportunity to supply a wider offering of certified products, giving our customers and their builders more product options,” states Todd Lindsey, President of Eastern Engineered Wood Products.
Products included under the certifications are engineered wood I-Joists, Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam), and Oriented Strand Board (OSB) Rimboard.
SGS, the certification body who conducted on-site audits for both standards at Eastern’s headquarters, is one of the largest registrars in the world, with over 80,000 certificates worldwide in 75 countries. Thirty percent of the top 500 companies in the world have trusted SGS to assess and certify their management systems. Eastern’s FSC Chain of Custody certification was the very first FSC Chain of Custody certificate issued under SGS’ North American business unit.
Servicing the Northeastern United States, Eastern Engineered Wood Products designs and distributes structural floor and roof systems to the professional contractor trade through a network of retail lumberyards and building truss manufacturers. The company’s services include technical design and CAD services, cutting product to size for application on individual projects, and just-in-time delivery. | December 31, 2009 -- Eastern Engineered Wood Products Hosts UC TEAMS Charter School Students |
Eastern Engineered Wood Products is the classroom for a day for 60 seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students from UC Teams Charter School in Plainfield, NJ. |
Eastern Engineered Wood Products (EEWP), a wholesale distributor of structural building products servicing the northeastern U.S., hosted a group of 60 seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students from UC TEAMS Charter School for Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics and Science which is located in Plainfield, NJ. The school is a small learning community where all students achieve high academic standards by using the built environment as a learning laboratory. As a part of their curriculum, students prepare for a successful high school experience, post-secondary education, and the world of work by interacting with professionals in the construction community.
Steve Colson, co-owner of Eastern Engineered Wood Products recognized a match between his company and the UC TEAMS mission and extended an invitation for an in-depth field trip. The field trip exposed the students to all aspects of the company’s business, including production, transportation, customer service, procurement, accounting, and technical design. A popular part of the day was an interactive classroom session where the students marked up blueprints and assisted in producing a framing layout utilizing a CAD computer program.
The experience was a hit with the students, evidenced by letters that each wrote to the company after their visit. Their genuine interest and studious nature left a great impression on the employees of EEWP. Colson was especially impressed, commenting, “UC TEAMS is an incredible school with extremely dedicated teachers and students. I was certainly an honor to be able to host such bright and inquisitive students.”
